An Italian obstetrician has carried out a study into the application of moxibustion at Zhiyin BL-67 for the treatment of breech presentation in pregnancy. Francesco Cardini and Huang Weixin divided 130 women (in the 33rd week of their first pregnancy) in two Chinese hospitals into two groups. Those treated with moxibustion (for 7 consecutive daily treatments with seven more if needed) experienced greater foetal movement and had significantly more normal (cephalic) births than women left untreated  (The Journal of the American Medical Association 1998;280). A Chinese study suggests that moxibustion may be as effective as drugs for alleviating menstrual pain. In a pragmatic randomised trial, 152 participants received either moxibustion or ibuprofen over a three month period. Moxibustion was carried out at Guanyuan REN-4, Shenque REN-8 and Sanyinjiao SP-6, once a day for seven days leading up to the beginning of the period for three menstrual cycles. The results showed that menstrual pain intensity in both the experimental and control groups was significantly reduced after treatment. Pain reduction was not significantly different between the two groups. Three months after the end of treatment, the...

Moxibustion at acupuncture point Zhiyin BL-67 can correct non-vertex presentation, reduce the number of caesarean sections performed and achieve cost savings for the healthcare system, compared with conventional treatment. Analysis by Spanish researchers showed that moxibustion prevents 8.92% of deliveries with non-vertex presentation compared with conventional treatment, resulting in an average cost saving of €107.11 per delivery (mainly due to the costs saved by avoiding the need for caesarean section). Analysis also showed an incremental cost per delivery ranging from €68 for moxibustion versus €640 for conventional treatment. In a Japanese study, two herbal medicine prescriptions administered alternately within the menstrual cycle were found to have powerful antidysmenorrhoeic effects. The two prescriptions were Shakuyaku-kanzo-to (Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang/Peony & Licorice Decoction) and Toki-shakuyaku-san (Dang Gui Shao Yao San/Tangkuei and Peony powder). All 17 dysmenorrhea patients in the study, including recurrent endometriotic and adenomyotic patients obtained complete relief within three months. Nine of 12 patients treated with the herbal therapy ovulated and all three secondary ammenorrhoea patients with moderate levels of serum estradiol, but none of the three secondary amenorrhoea patients with little serum estradiol, also ovulated. Ginger (Sheng Jiang) is an effective remedy for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. A single blind clinical trial carried out in Iran randomly assigned 67 pregnant women to receive either 1000 mg ginger in capsules or placebo capsules for four days. Ginger users demonstrated a higher rate of nausea improvement than placebo users (85% versus 56%). The decrease in vomiting among ginger users was also significantly greater than among women who received the placebo (50% vs. 9%). (Effects of ginger capsules on pregnancy, nausea and vomiting. A Chinese study has concluded that electroacupuncture (EA) at Sanyinjiao SP-6 is an effective way of decreasing labour pain. A total of 350 women in labour were randomised to either electroacupuncture at Sanyinjiao SP-6, sham electroacupuncture at Sanyinjiao SP-6 or a control group. Self-rated labour pain scores from women in the verum electroacupuncture group were significantly less than in the control group after 30 minutes of needle retention and at two and four hours after needle withdrawal.
