Evidence supporting the use of TCM in asthma treatment in is increasing. Two American authors have reviewed promising TCM interventions for asthma and explored their mechanisms of action. Possible mechanisms at work include anti-inflammation, inhibition of airway smooth muscle contraction, and immunomodulation. One of the authors has recently presented some preliminary results from a clinical trial at a conference. Her team studied the effects of an anti-asthma herbal medicine intervention (ASHMI) consisting of three-herbs (Gan Cao, Ku Shen, and Ling Zhi), which has been shown to improve asthma symptoms. ASHMI was found to reduce total immunoglobulin (Ig)E levels in patients...

Abstract Background: Use of laser makes efficient acupuncture application without the use of stainless steel needles. Irradiation with laser of acupuncture points can produce effects of diminishing inflammation, relieving pain, enhancing metabolism, improving tissue regeneration and immunity. Objectives: To discuss its efficacy as non-pharmacological intervention that may provide a valuable adjunctive or alternative treatment for chronic respiratory diseases. Subjects and methods: Indications were 31 patients suffering from chronic respiratory illness (asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis and ILD). They were subdivided into a control group that received conservative treatment with medication and a study group that received a 10 day course of LLL...

Abstract Background and Objective: Patients in critical care settings often require prolonged mechanical ventilation (MV) therapy and, occasionally, they cannot be weaned from MV. The authors evaluated the efficacy of acupuncture treatment for improving the respiratory status and promoting successful weaning from prolonged MV in patients at intensive care units (ICUs). Design: Retrospective observational study. Setting: Gifu University Hospital, Gifu, Japan. Subjects: The authors included 16 tracheostomized patients receiving MV for >21 days at the ICU of Gifu University Hospital, who underwent acupuncture therapy for improving their respiratory status. Intervention: Acupuncture treatment was conducted in four sessions per week. Outcome measures: The data of tidal volume...

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To compare the curative effects of heat-sensitive moxibustion with conventional drugs on chronic persistent asthma and seek avaluable therapy to replace Western Medicine. METHODS: The participants in this multi-center, randomized, and controlled study were randomly divided into two groups: group A (n=144), treated with heat-sensitive moxibustion (50 sessions) and group B (n=144), treated with Seretide (salmeterol 50 μg/fluticasone 250 μg, twice a day). The scores of asthma control test (ACT), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and attack frequency were measured after 15, 30, 60, and 90 days of treatment. Patients followed up...

Abstract Objective To observe the efficacy of acupuncture combined with acupoint injection for post-cold cough. Methods Twenty-five cases of post-cold cough, who visited the department of acupuncture-moxibustion of our hospital from January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2016, were reviewed, and all the patients were treated by acupuncture combined with acupoint injection. Acupoint selection for acupuncture: bilateral Dìngchuăn ( EX-B 1), Fēngmén ( BL 12), Lièquē  LU 7), Fèishū ( BL 13) and Shènshū  BL 23); the acupuncture was conducted once a day, with 1 day of interval after 6 days; 6 times was considered as 1 course, and 2 consecutive courses were needed. Acupoint...

In a randomised controlled study, patients of 18 years or older with allergic asthma were assigned to either routine care plus acupuncture (15 sessions over three months, 184 patients) or routine care alone (173 patients). Patients who did not consent to randomisation also received acupuncture (1088 patients). At three months, asthma specific quality of life and health-related general quality of life improved significantly in both acupuncture groups compared to controls. Background: Dyspnea on exertion (DOE) is a major symptom of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is difficult to control. This study was performedtodeterminewhetheracupunctureissuperiorto placebo needling in improving DOE in patients with COPD who are receiving standard medication. Methods: Sixty-eightof111patientsfromtheKansairegion of Japan who were diagnosed as having COPD and were receiving standard medication participated in a randomized, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial(July1, 2006, through March 31, 2009) in which the patients, evaluators, and statistician were unaware of the random allocation. Participants were randomly assigned to traditionalacupuncture(real acupuncture group,n=34)orplaceboneedling(placeboacupuncturegroup,n=34).Both groups received real or placebo needling at thes ame acupoints once a week for...

A Cochrane Database systematic review from China suggests that the herbal formula Sheng Mai San (SMS – Generate the Pulse Powder) may exert a positive effect on heart failure, especially when used alongside usual medical treatment. SMS consists of three herbs: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Mai Men Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) and Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis). The authors included a total of 14 RCTs (858 patients) in their review. Of these, 11 trials compared SMS plus usual treatment with usual treatment alone, and three trials compared SMS with placebo. Meta-analysis showed that patients taking SMS plus usual treatment were...
