In a collaborative study between Chinese and US cancer centres, the Chinese formula Ren Shen Yang Rong Tang (RSYRT, ‘Ginseng Decoction to Nourish the Nutritive Qi’) has been found to significantly reduce severe fatigue in cancer patients. RSYRT is a tonic formula containing 12 herbs: Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae alba, Dang Gui Radix (Angelicae Sinensis) Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Huang Qi (Radix Astragali), Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae Praeparata, Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Fu Ling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos), Yuan Zhi (Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae), Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis Recens) and Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae). Clinicians set up an open-label, prospective, phase I/II trial and enrolled 33 patients who had completed cancer treatment and who reported moderate to severe fatigue, lasting at least four months. Patients took RSYRT twice a day for six weeks. Fatigue severity was shown to decrease significantly from before therapy to six weeks after therapy (from 7.06 to 3.30 on a 0-10 scale). Fatigue category was observed to shift significantly; of 22 patients with severe fatigue (rated higher than seven) before therapy, 11 had mild fatigue and 11 had moderate fatigue after TCM treatment. The time-to-fatigue-alleviation was two to three weeks.
